Welcome to the Holmfirth Harriers Track and Field Section.
If you are interested in running, jumping, and throwing then we can provide you with the platform to train and compete at all levels from grassroots club leagues through to championship events.
Over the years, Holmfirth Harriers has established a good reputation in the Track and Field environment. We have consistently produced successful teams and individual athletes who have achieved success – whether accomplishing individual personal goals and personal bests or winning medals and competitions.
There are loads of track and field events and fixtures out there and working out which ones to enter can be difficult. Hopefully, this page can help point you in the right direction.
The main priorities for the club are the two track and field leagues that we are members of. First is the Senior Northern Track and Field League. This is for athletes who are in the age groups from under 17 upwards. Selection for the club team is based on performance but the more athletes we have available to select from the better. As well as athletes we need officials and supporters to come along and help the team where every point gained is crucial for our final position.
Secondly, we are members of the West Yorkshire Track and Field League. This is a great entry level league where everyone is welcome to compete – it’s great for junior athletes in particular. There is no selection criteria involved and everybody who enters gets to compete. The aim is for athletes to enjoy themselves whilst also chasing points both as an individual and for the club.
We also like to see our athletes competing at the higher-level championship events including the Yorkshire County Championships and the Northern Championships. These are suitable for athletes who are ready to rise through the ranks and compete in an environment where the performance levels required are more demanding.
Links to entry details and more information about all these leagues and championships can be found both above and at the foot of this page.
Finally, there are many more open events out there for people to enter, these are useful for athletes looking to test themselves out prior to the bigger races. As and when details of these events are available, we will post them in the events part of this page.
The best way to prepare for competing is to join one of the coach-led groups at Holmfirth Harriers. Juniors can join the group led by coaches John McFadzean, Richard Szostak and Russ Kaye. Older athletes you can join the speed group led by coach Neil Dutton for the shorter distances or the group led by coach Alwyn Dewhirst for the longer distances. If you’re not sure which group is right for you then feel free to speak to one of the coaches on a club night and we will help you out.
